Ditch yo’ trainer. Get a Diva.

Everyone deserves the benefits of an active lifestyle. I know first-hand how difficult it is to start and maintain a fitness regime while living in a marginalized body. As a plus sized, outspoken Black woman in New York City, I’m often ignored by the fitness industry. When I am acknowledged, my body is often seen as a problem to be solved.  This is precisely why I’m hell bent on making fitness accessible for all athletes, with special attention paid to the plus size, BIPOC, LGBTQ+ and other discredited communities.

My career began in 2011 at a pole dancing studio in Brooklyn where I taught pole on the weekends as a hobby. I had no idea at the time, but those classes would serve as a gateway into a full-time career. Over the last decade, I went on to teach TRX, BOSU, conditioning, and flexibility classes in forty states and nine countries. As if I that wasn’t enough, I’ve recently added teacher training programs and speaking engagements to my portfolio of services.

Whether you want to be a better coach, learn how to swing on a pole, or lift some heavy sh*t, I’ve got you covered. Smash the link here so we can get it poppin.’

AS SEEN IN

From the deeply moving to the purely fun, “Tamron Hall” is a daily destination for all things topical and a platform for viewers to connect with the people who are shaping our world through meaningful, engaging, and entertaining conversations.

Are you feeling a little less than motivated in your workout regimen lately? Maybe you’re just going through the motions—hitting the gym and using the same machines or doing the same at-home yoga classes on repeat. We’ve all been there.

The fitness industry's obsession with young, slender, and super strong athletes has alienated 99% of the general public, and pushed out the very people it seeks to inspire. This is why Roz 'The Diva' Mays has dedicated her 9-year fitness career to working with underrepresented athletes, including people of diverse sizes, abilities, and socioeconomic backgrounds.

In the workout world, as elsewhere, standards of whiteness often dictate whose bodies become the definition of fitness and health on social media. But plenty of BIPOC fitness instructors and influencers to follow on Instagram have been producing excellent workout content for years.

On this week’s episode of the Checking In podcast, we’re talking about how to create a workout routine that you’ll actually stick to. In the second half of the episode, Amy talks to pole dancing fitness instructor and trainer, Roz “The Diva” Mays, about another really important component of incorporating fitness into your life: finding a workout you love.

In this episode of 30 Days to Greatness, Azadeh learns just how much upper body strength it takes to be a pole dancer. Watch her learn how to pole dance in 30 days.
